Metal Balustrades Guide: Types + FAQs

A comprehensive guide to metal canopy designs — exploring types, materials and answering the questions we hear most.

What is a balustrade?

A balustrade is a row of repeating balusters—small posts or pillars, that support the upper rail of a railing. Balustrades are frequently used in various architectural and construction applications to provide support, safety, and aesthetic appeal. They are mostly used as railings on stairs, balconies and terraces but have many other applications, particularly in commercial settings, where they can divide zones and safely guide the flow of traffic.

Fabricated balustrade railings can be manufactured from mild steel, aluminium, and wrought iron and have endless design possibilities including patterns, colours and ornamental details. Fabricated railings, are durable, low maintenance and can be tailored to suit specific architectural styles.

Primary Materials

  • Stainless steel: our balustrading is developed using premium S316 marine-grade stainless steel for any external application and S304 for an internal setting. Each item is carefully polished to a satin finish refined to a 320 grit, with the option for a mirror polish finish.
  • Modern aesthetics: using glass, merging steel with glass, we develop contemporary designs that balance modern design with cost-efficiency. The interplay with circle handrails and posts gives a sleek and minimalistic look that can resonate with modern architectural trends.
  • Mild steel/wrought iron tradition: for anyone who seeks the traditional flair, mild steel (often referred to as wrought iron) is the material of choice. This cost-effective alternative enables a broad range of design possibilities. This invites you to infuse your personal style, whether it be a fusion of ornate juliet balcony features or a bespoke railing design for your residence or business.

Finishing Touches

  • Primer painted: a foundational weather-resistant primer for those who wish to apply their own top-coat paint finish.
  • Galvanised: our standard external for mild steel is hot dip galvanised, this offers a robust shield against the elements. Also, if you decide to paint the balustrade later, we advise using a mordant solution for optimal adhesion, prior to application.
  • Galvanised and powder coated: after galvanising we apply a polyester powder coat for a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish. Also, custom colour matching is available to ensure the balustrade will complete your design palette perfectly.
  • Exclusive powder coating: powder coating provides a smooth and appealing finish without galvanising.

Infill Materials

  • Safety glass: our glass balustrade are customisable, from opaque textures to any design any pattern you desire, generally through a screen-printing fritted process. However even with all these features we can ensure that our balustrade panels will comply to BS regulations.
  • Solid bar robustness: choosing from round or square infill bars, with options to incorporate decorative motifs to take this design from simple to ornate.
  • Perforated sheet: for those seeking privacy without compromising on light, these metal panels are the idea choice. These patterns are available in both mild steel and stainless steel.
  • Wire rope and stainless-steel bars: these infill options are typically reserved for commercial projects or other residential applications that are not subject to building control.

Handrail Materials

  • Brass handrail: this is an eye-catching handrail that can enhance the balustrading, giving off a 'classy' appearance. This is the perfect addition to any balustrade, no matter its location. This is available in a variety of sectional sizes, please ask for more information.
  • Mild steel or stainless-steel handrail: these sections are both available in flat, convex and tubular. Each section is available in a large range of sizes, which means we can accommodate any preference you require.
  • Timber handrail: this is a unique product that we can offer on our balustrades giving it a unique look and versatility. With this the design possibilities are endless and in certain environments this can be seen as the only way forward to further enhance the building's ornate design.
  • Solid brass mirror polished handrail provides a luxurious finish in Dallas Burston Polo Club.
